"Sometimes in these publications [i.e. Trench journals] romanticized imagery of individuals perishing in a bold thrust was replaced with macabre humour about indiscrimate slaughter. The Shell-Hole Advance told members of the 11th Infantry Brigade that by the time hostilities ceased, French and Belgian farmers would already be more than amply compensated for any damage by well churned and fertilized fields."
